Join Us in Celebrating 150 Years of Transformation

The OSU150 Sea Grant Festival is part of OSU150, a yearlong celebration of Oregon State University’s 150th anniversary. Join us in celebrating the university’s many years of stewardship in protecting our coasts, oceans and all who depend on them. Learn how our dedicated faculty are discovering new frontiers, educating current and future generations and working with communities to solve today’s most pressing issues. Based at Oregon State University since 1971, Oregon Sea Grant is one of 33 Sea Grant programs around the U.S. under the umbrella of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Oregon Sea Grant, which is funded by NOAA, OSU and grants, serves the state through research, outreach and education that helps people understand, rationally use and conserve marine and coastal resources.

Oregon Sea Grant:
• Funds marine-related research at universities throughout Oregon.
• Has more than a dozen OSU Extension Service specialists along the coast and in Corvallis who help communities and industries address issues of concern.
• Operates the Visitor Center, a public education wing of the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) in Newport.
• Offers a marine education program at HMSC featuring workshops, field trips and hands-on activities for students and teachers.
• Provides scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students.
• Informs the public and media about Oregon Sea Grant’s work so that others can benefit.

Wave Energy Test Facility
The Wave Energy Test Facility at Oregon State University, with $35 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, is poised to accelerate the worldwide growth of the emerging wave energy industry. Located off the coast of Newport, the facility will be the first pre-permitted full-scale, grid-connected wave energy test site in the United States to support the development, testing and commercialization of wave energy conversion technology. Marine Studies Initiative Oregon State’s Marine Studies Initiative is a 10-year program to address key issues involving the coast, the ocean and ocean literacy. It builds on the university’s deep history of nationally ranked programs in marine sciences and natural resources, faculty excellence and premier facilities. OSU plans to have up to 500 students annually studying and conducting research in Newport by 2025.

Oregon Coast Tour Highlights

Astoria
Astoria Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station: Explore innovations in processing seafood and how researchers are addressing local issues. Learn how Oregon State researchers helped pioneer ways to process low-value fish into surimi, an imitation crabmeat used in seafood salads, California rolls and other dishes. See equipment on display and in action.

Newport
Hatfield Marine Science Visitor Center: Enjoy our popular touch tank and wave energy exhibit, as well as special Sea Grant Festival activities and a traveling exhibit celebrating Oregon State University’s 150th Anniversary.

Hatfield Marine Science Center: Go behind the scenes for a one-day-only Marine Science Fair, with interactive exhibits by Oregon State faculty and student scientists. Bring your inner scientist to learn the how and why of understanding the world around us.

Marine Studies Building: This state-of-the-art research and teaching facility under construction at the Hatfield Marine Science Center will double as a tsunami vertical evacuation site. See the design and learn about the exciting new academic programs the building will host beginning in 2019 or visit marinestudies.oregonstate.edu.

Port Orford
Port Orford Field Station: Tour the labs and learn how Oregon State’s newest field station supports coastal stewardship and sustainability through access to the region’s unique marine and terrestrial ecosystem.

Dock Walks Go on a guided walk with Oregon Sea Grant Extension faculty to learn about the various types of fishing vessels, what they catch and other aspects of Oregon’s commercial fishing industry. Available in Warrenton, Newport and Charleston.

Oregon Coast Quests
This Oregon Sea Grant program features clue-directed hunts that are self-guided, outdoors and fun for all ages. Choose from four unique quests — available to download from the festival schedule at OSU150.org — and have a blast exploring the Oregon Coast!
