Earl and Hilda Jones, owners of Abacela Winery, were the first to plant and produce Tempranillo as a vintage dated, varietal wine in America. Tempranillo is the world’s fifth most widely planted red wine grape, and in its native Spain produces some of the world’s most famous and expensive wines. Alex Cabrera, an Oregon State horticulture graduate, is the vineyard manager at Abacela, which has grown to 770 acres growing 20 grape varieties.
