Central Oregon’s Jefferson County produces 85 percent of the hybrid carrot seed used in the United States, and an estimated 70 percent of the seed used worldwide. Oregon State’s Central Oregon Agricultural Research Center has provided vast research on the topic, including the nutrient needs of hybrid carrot seed crops and the effectiveness of drip irrigation. As a result of this research, nearly 40 percent of the carrot seed acreage in central Oregon is now using drip irrigation. In addition, more than 90 percent of Central Oregon carrot seed growers have adopted Oregon State research-based recommendations on how to cultivate high-value carrot seed crops.
