Dean's Distinguished Lecture: "Innovating our Energy Future"
José N. Reyes, Ph.D., NuScale Power co-founder
Henry W. and Janice J. Schuette Endowed Chair in Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Health Physics

Meeting global energy needs in a carbon-constrained world is driving energy innovation. An abundance of clean and resilient energy is needed to lift nearly 6 billion people out of energy poverty. Oregon State University, an internationally recognized energy innovator, is working on “all-of-the-above” cutting-edge energy solutions that include wind power, wave power, solar power, bio-fuels, and small modular reactors. Working together, these technologies have the potential to change the world. Oregon State is also garnering attention because of its unique programs to move energy innovations from the lab to the market. Our students are not only gaining the knowledge and skills needed to be workforce ready, they are also learning to become entrepreneurial leaders as CEOs and CTOs of their own startup companies. One of Oregon State's greatest entrepreneurial success stories, NuScale Power, is now poised to bring clean energy to the world.

Registration is required for this event.

OSU is celebrating its 150th anniversary with a year-long series of events, including four festivals. These festivals recognize that Oregon State is one of only two universities in the U.S. that have been honored with land, sea, space and sun grant designations. This event is part of the OSU150 Land Grant Festival running October 1 through 17. Learning, discovery and service to all people will always drive us to make our world better.  Learn more at OSU150.org.

José N. Reyes, professor emeritus of nuclear engineering and the Henry W. and Janice J. Schuette Endowed Chair in Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Health Physics, is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the chief technology officer and co-founder of NuScale Power.

NuScale Power, a nuclear reactor company, was launched from research Reyes led at the Oregon State University College of Engineering in the early 2000s. Its small modular design – the first of its kind – is poised to come to market in the mid-2020s.

Reyes is internationally recognized for his expertise in nuclear reactor safety and thermal hydraulics. He was a faculty member in the Oregon State University College of Engineering’s School of Nuclear Science and Engineering for more than 30 years. At Oregon State, he served as school head, director of the Advanced Thermal Hydraulics Research Laboratory, and co-director of the Battelle Energy Alliance Academic Center of Excellence for Thermal Fluids and Reactor Safety. He also managed the Westinghouse AP600 and AP1000 reactor integral system design certification test programs. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has certified both designs, using world-class test facilities at Oregon State.

Reyes has been an invited lecturer throughout the United States and in Japan, China, South Korea, Italy, Switzerland, and Austria.
